So you think that the White House briefing was just a PR stunt? I have to admit, that would be outrageous to say the least.
But what if they did actually find evidence of life, and the White House told them to keep quiet for now?
Maybe people just aren't ready for such a discovery?...
"Well, if it's not in the Bible, this is all the work of the Devil."
We might be surprised at how many people actually agree with the above quote! Are there enough of these religious zealots to band together and burn down the entire space exploration program?

Mars has to remain as inert eye-candy in order to distract our mainstream media from the old and new science of our moon, Venus and the Sirius star/solar system where so much likely originated.
Mars needs to have only a little bit of hidden h2o, such as a few ppb but not ever enough to make it worth our visiting in person unless we bring most every drop of water along for the ride (so to speak).

That's an awesome journal, RL! Thank you for that.
Either they've learned their lesson (that if something must be hidden, it's better to hide it "in plain sight" instead of arousing suspicions), or they're still not telling the whole story. The latter might still be true, because none of this so far explains the necessity for the Whitehouse briefing.
If the major secret were just the finding of perchlorates, then why did the Whitehouse have to be briefed?

If the major secret were just the finding of perchlorates, then why did the White- house have to be br ie fe d ?

Because thus far there's not one surface ppb worth of h2o to be found (other than what they'd brought along for the ride). They'll have to dig/drill deeper, perhaps a km deeper if situated within a deep enough crater to start off with.
Somewhere within or under that frozen to death crust of Mars is likely water to behold. Another decade plus a few trillion of our hard earned loot well spent from now, and we should be capable of extracting h2o from those geode like pockets of mineral brines that might eventually amount to 0.1% of what water is sequestered within the basalt geode pockets and relatively low density core of our Selene/ moon.
