Wife's machine: running Win98FE and every reboot comes up with a FLEETING error message that something in the 1st line in CONFIG.SYS is corrupted, or something.
Looking at CONF.SYS, which only has one line, in the only line is a reference to C:\CDROM\IDE.SYS and there is no such folder.
I'm not certain, but I think that once when she couldn't get her music to play, she deleted this folder [or moved this item to C:\, don't remember] after which the music played fine and CD's are readable etc.
Two potentials here, 1 the CDROM\IDE.SYS belongs to another machine [the HD was moved when the MBd failed] and this IDE.SYS probably does not relate to the 52X that's in this machine. 2 something strange is going on, malware?
The reason I'm posting is that the modified date on the file, IDE.SYS, is 11/3/09 at 8:30am, which matches a reboot today. That did not seem reasonable.
What is this IDE.SYS file for?
Does malware use this file and is this machine at some kind of risk?
Should I rename this CONFIG.SYS file so it is not called to avoid getting an error message?
That line is typical for an INI file entry for the CD drive, but if the drive is supported in Windows it's not required. You could delete the file, or rename it and reboot and make sure the CD drive is still working, then delete it. -- Jeff Richards ----------------------------------------

1. Win98 does not need AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or CONFIG.SYS. Win95 did, so this function persisted in Win98 as "legacy" functions but can be wholly omitted. Win98 is designed (first) not to need any SYS files to activate CD drives (verified via / Control Panel / Device Manager) and secondly to load Windows drivers (not the DOS drivers that are all AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS can load.)
2. Only filenames AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS are read in the Win98 boot process. CONF.SYS would not be read.
You can test #1 by renaming these files AUTOEXEC.BAX and CONFIG.SYX and rebooting. If Win98FE boots with all the functions you need, you do not need these two files.

Yes, check for malware, first backing up essential data etc.

Thank you for the insight on Win95. One machine, now in storage, had all these autoexec.bat etc on it. It also had a version of PAINT that contained a font, I've never found again. There were 3 fonts I used to use. They were like old German printing, maybe Old English, but I think it was called Gaudy Text. I used to make all our Christmas tags using that font, but alas when MS 'improved' to Win98 they dropped it. Have not found it again. Word font closest so far is GothicE GothicG and GothicI aren't as close.
Do you still have a copy of Win95 Paint with those fonts?

Windows 95 did NOT require autoexec.bat or config.sys either. Only certain old hardware needed them, and some hardware would also need them in Win98. Most CD drives worked fine in Win95 without those files loaded, using the protected mode drivers supplied by Win95....same as Win98 in that respect. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 A+ http://dts-l.net/

I don't have the software to which you refer, but traditional German font (including the almost unrecognisable capitals) ... try just putting
