On advice from PCR, I am starting this new thread.
About 3 months ago, I got an error msg from my prefered software (jad) saying it could'nt play (playback) the music c/d I put in. It was out-of-the-blue to me as I have never had a problem playing music c/d's before. I checked Every setting Everywhere, and all looked just fine. So, I tried another cd-rom player, but same result. Also, I used different software, ie: "jad, windows player, win-amp, sound edit pro, " and etc etc... each had its own error msg, some more detailed than others, but it didnt matter because my music wouldnt play. I tried playing music that I have in files and folders etc, no problem there at all.
After a while, I just decided to go buy a new cd/dvd player.. burner too. It also didnt work, and I knew straight away that I had just wasted $70bucks because the problem obviously wasnt the player(s).
My system is 98SE. It has on-board sound which I found out later didnt even require the cable from the player to mobo. Heres the thing:::::: I cant for the life of me remember what I did, but I eventually got it to work again.... without cable too.
and now, to now. Last week the xact same error msg came up when I wanted to play some music from a c/d, and I cant remember what I did to fix it before.
Also, about 2 months ago, I re-wound my registry back to a date about 3 years ago,, but this has nothing to do with my player playing music, as it worked before that and also afterwards. (I say this because I know of at least two people who will make an issue of it.... but it doesnt come into play at all.)
On the cd drive itself, make sure the audio cable is plugged in.
At the other end, If using the onboard sound. Make sure it plugged into the motherboard.
If using a pci or an isa sound cord make sure the other end is plug into that and not the motherboard.
You might try this with or without those steps above or even before you try those step above.
Control Panel-System -Device Manager Look for your sound. Remove all of the sound stuff. Reboot. Let windows install the sound drivers. Reboot It is ok to have more that one sounds system installed. Control Panel Media Multimedia, choose you preferred device
I am not sure, it been awhile since I done this. Go over to devices. Audio codec. Only if you still have problems. I think you change GSM 6.10 priority to 3, maybe PCR can verify this.

You know, no offense, really - I tend to get a little verbose and obsessed by details myself (I'm talking about both of your posts in this thread so far).
(Now get your sense of humor ready...)
But as MANY have said to me, "It's a wonder anyone has not killed you yet!"

Not sure what your beef is, or why, but each to his own I guess. I thought I asked a civilized question in a civilized group, and in fact, I was invited to start a thread about my prob from a respected member of this group.

It isnt at the moment as all has been fine without it plugged in, but I'll try that next shut-down. ---------

Not sure what you mean here greg? My player has always worked in the exact configuration its in now, and nothing has been altered.

If you mean sound-card, I dont have one... I believe my via-chipset supplies all things. My sound system itself is an Altec-Lansing set up with built in amp and woofer etc,, plus of course the two satellites.

Okay, will try the above things tonight when I get booted off the net.. (its a dial-up thing, I get five hours then have to re-connect.)

Am at 'Devices' now; under the heading of 'Audio Devices' it has two entries, one is for my modem and the other is for for 'VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM)'. There doesnt seem to be any mention of 'GSM 6.10' or 3.... perhaps I am in the wrong area? I went thru' control panel>MultiMedia>Devices.
> But as MANY have said to me, "It's a wonder anyone has not > killed you yet!"
And, if by 'killed' you mean kill-filtered, then its obvious you are not one that has done that;; on the other hand, if by 'killed' you mean physical violence, then please, oh please, hop on a plane and front up, I would be mooooore than happy to accomodate you. And also, if MANY have said that to you, then you are obviously in mail contact with said ppl, because threats on a micro server are deemed to be bad form ol' chap.
ps, dont buy your plane ticket as a return ticket, cos you wont!! (my Roo is lookin' forward to meetin' ya.... Cobber!)

now, on behalf of microsoft, do you have any input that would assist a microsoft windows users problem,? are you an msvp? do you have any affiliation with the corp'? are you on their payroll? do you have authority to either assist or abuse microsoft users?
I have a problem, and its about my c/d not play8ing music,, do you have any information that might assist me in rectifying the problem?
I asked my Roo, and he said that I was better off posting in a group that is dedicated to win98 probs,,,, so, here I is again.

Reinstall all your MB drivers. You should be able to find them on the Asus site: http://support.asus.com/
UNISTALL your sound card drivers for the add-on card. Shut down the computer and remove the sound card. Go into the BIOS upon reboot and make sure the onboard sound is enabled, if there is such an entry, which is in a section called "Features" or similar and the section also contains USB,Serial Ports,Game Ports etc.
If you are going to use the add-on sound card, go into the BIOS and Disable your onboard sound card and then exit and shut down the computer. Add the add-on sound card, connect any wires that need to be connected (some mbs don't require any) and boot up. Hopefully you have the sound card drivers for your OS and when Windows wants to install its drivers, you can say no and install the mfg drivers.
Since the CD doesn't work in either OS on your dual boot system and you tried a new CD player, it does sound like it could be the wrong BIOS selection, a bad mb, mb drivers, or a bad ISA or PCI slot (depending on what type of slot your sound card uses),
What is the Asus mb model?
Buffalo
PS: Most speakers need an amplifier to work well when connected to a computer.
> aaaaawww,, mister 'toid' gone all quiet all of a > sudden,, whatashame.
That's /thanatoid/, thank you. Sorry, I do occasionally have to go do the dishes, read a book, or sleep or something.
> now, on behalf of microsoft, do you have any input that > would assist a microsoft windows users problem
Yes, don't use ANY MS software except the OS, and spend as long as necessary - in your particular case, everybody uses their computer for different things [WHY would *I* play a CD on my computer when I have a stereo with better speakers than ANY speakers ever made for "computer use"?] - to make it run as it should out of the box if MS wasn't MS. In my case this is still an ongoing project, and I am on 98SELite and was on 95B until about 5 years ago, and am barely testing the murky and evil waters of XP Pro... and not being very impressed.
> are you an msvp?
Enough with the insults, OK?
> do you have any affiliation with the corp'? are you > on their payroll? do you have authority to either assist > or abuse microsoft users?
Anyone can say whatever they want. Welcome to the Usenet. FWIW, more MSVP's than thanatoids have called posters assholes.
> I have a problem, and its about my c/d not play8ing music,, > do you have any information that might assist me in > rectifying the problem?
Yes, but it is SO basic I am not going to bother. So are most of your other problems. Instead of relying on this group of kindly, yet bored and fairly lifeless people for help with tying your shoes, you might consider doing some reading on basics, doing research on various tech forums or just Googling - which these days is as close to all of the above as there is.
> I asked my Roo,
Whatever the hell Roo is.
> and he said that I was better off posting > in a group that is dedicated to win98 probs,,,,
No, you're better off educating yourself, especially with such simple things. Of course, it takes some effort.
I NEVER post unless I can not find the answer to my problem in a reasonable amount of time - this can be 1-0 minutes or 3 days - in the case of "CD won't play CD's" it should be about 3 minutes.
> so, here I is again.
No, here you ARE again, or, in 1st person, "here I AM again".
> Whadayareckon 'toid', do you know nuff 'bout 98 to chirp in > with advice ?
Yes, but as I said, go and find the answer yourself. If you can't, then you're too stupid to own a computer.
> do you know nuff' bout' how to deal with another human? > are you micro's flavour of the month in representing them?
I hate all humans equally, starting with myself, and at this moment, ending with you.
I /do/ know how to deal with them when absolutely forced to, but unless YOU decide to get on a plane and come beat the shit out of me, in this case I do not see it necessary to employ my people skills.

How did you know I was uncircumcised?

Note, make sure the computer is unplugged from the outlet and all power is gone. Push the power button after the computer is unplugged.
Open computer case
There should be an Audio cable that came with the drive. Plug one to the drive and the other end on the motherboard, there should be a plug in or use another audio cable.
See if that works.
If not try this.
You will need you windows 98se cd or 98se cab files.
Go to Control Panel-System-Device manager.
Go down to Sound Drivers- remove all the hardware there. If windows starts install stuff, hit cannel. Reboot.
Let windows install all the items.
Now reboot.
Now try to see if that works.
Post back.
Greg
As far as the GSM 6.10 codec. I don't know how to install that.

How do you make sure all power is gone??

Hello Buffalo,,, This the only post I have opened, curiousity more than anything, and its late on a friday night.
Here goes...
For frigs sake, why does everyone keep refering to a 'sound-card'...I Dont bloody well have one... simple!! My Sound has always come from my EPOX mobo, of which is picked up by my altec lansing system. Gawd, this post has gotten soooooo outta whack.
Not once did I talk about the other system (Asus) that I'm currently building.... I merely posted a post outlining what had happened regarding my ability to play music c/d's. (got no bloody idea where the bun-fight came from or why 'toid' said what he said.)
Look, buffalo, you seem like a reasonable guy,, can you see what I am saying? The computer I'm typing this on has a Brand New player in it, but for some stupid reason, 'it'(not that i'm accusing the player) wont play music c/d's. (its also my Primary puter, the one I'm using now, also the one that had the probs' with dial-up.. just wanted to make that clear) I know there is nothing wrong with my Via chipset as I can pick any music from my music folders and play them... so something, somewhere is upsetting the apple-cart. There must be some problem twixt the player and its instruction set and the chip-set... If you are into 'HEX', I can give you the error msg that win media player gave me.
So, bottom line is..... 1)3mnths (or so) ago, my c/d player came up with error msg, wouldnt play c/d's.
2)somewhere back then I fixed it,, (just cant remember what I did,,grr.)
3)a couple of weeks later, I was having huge probs regarding my dial-up connection,, and how I was being booted off when not using it for 15mins.
4)Had a huge thread going with MEB and PCR regarding that problem.(but has nothing to do with This problem)
5)Now we are simply in the present Buffalo,, the bloody c/d player is now not playing my Music c/d's. (any other c/d is just fine,, as is music from files/folders.) It is hard for me to blame the 'player', and I now believe it is not the player and never was.
Phew,, Hope that puts you more in the picture, and also hope others here realise that.... I have no friggin' idea how Asus and Epox mobos got mixed up in any of my posts... maybe its just the way I type or try to explain things,, if so, then I'll wear that and take the blame. :(
I have a huge respect for posters here who help ppl.... I have always had admiration for 'thanatoid, pcr, meb, pa-bear, 98guy, Don, DadiOH, franc, Buffalo, .. and the list goes on,, I always try to read this group when I have time and the opportunity. I'm not going to read anymore posts tonight, but rather hope that I can recieve some civil ones in the next 24 hours. If I have left out any details regarding my problem, simply point them out and I will supply them.
oh,, greg, if you read this,, I do know my way around the puter, no need to use the kid-gloves thingy.

Alright. I was trying to be simple.
On my computer. I have drive with an audio cable (Not the ide cable) that is connected to the mainboard and the cd drive. From what I have read, unless you have a newer computer. That carries the analog sound to the onboard sound card. Does the cd music play through media player? Open windows Media player up, insert cd. Then hit play.
Why people keep mentioning the sound drivers, they do get corrupted and sometimes get deleted or don't get installed correctly. That why I said delete the sound hardware in device manager and reboot and let windows install the drivers back.
To Buffalo, I had a similar problem S/C had. The cd sound on played through media player but wouldn't play using cdplayer or another media player files. My wav files wouldn't even work.
This is what I did. I removed all but the wave device for modem and the gameport joystick is sound, video and Game controllers. After, I did that, windows started to reinstall the sound stuff. So, I hit cancel, then reboot, Inserted my cd after windows 98se started to boot up. Windows installed all my sound card. (You may need to point to some sound card drives). When finished. I rebooted again. It worked.
I did have couple of sound problem later. One was the jumper was set wrong on the cd drive.
The other problem
The (E)IDE cable went bad. Now, this could also be S/C problem as well.
The last resort or solution. Would be to reinstall from a backup image or reinstall windows 98se.
On my system. There is a little green light inside that stays on even after you turn off the computer totally and unplug it from the wall. So, what I do is press the power button. This makes the light go dark.
If you don't have the light. If you have usb outlets on your system, use can use and usb hub that has a light on it. With windows started, plugin you hub. Reboot if needed. Turn your computer off. If you still have power, the light will be on, if not it will be off. This could also depend on the mainboard. On my older computers without the light. After, I unplugged it from the wall. I always pushed the power button on and wait from a few seconds.
In it, you stated that you could not play music cds on that machine, so I just wrongly thought it was the same machine you are having problems with now. Strange that two different machines will not play your music CDs (commerical or burned by you? ). The machine in the above link, had a sound card and had an Asus mb, I believe.

Yep, in that other post. That is where the confusion started , for me, anyways. I then also assumed that it would not read any cds. another bad assumption by me.

No, I'm not into Hex, but posting that error here may get a response from others that are into it.

This makes it sound like it won't play ANY cds or just your music cds. See, it 'was' sort of confusing.

That bit of info may help others respond better.

It sure does not sound like the CD player at all.

Yes indeed!! :)

I guess it wouldn't hurt to run some free anti-malware programs. I would recommend the Free MalwareBytes AntiMalware (MBAM) and the Free SuperAntiSpyware (SAS), while your waiting for more answers. http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html blue button on the lower left http://www.malwarebytes.org/ blue button on the left side . Dl, install, update and then run each one seperately. Both unistall easily, if you decide not to keep them. The free versions will detect and remove just as well as the paid versions, but they lack other features which the paid versions have. Buffalo PS: Do you have the same problems with all 'music' cds (commercail or home-burned)? Like Greg also suggested, go into Device Manager and do what he suggests. :)

Uhm, I'm only here for one reason, you mention some testing applications:
Malwarebytes - MBAM Operating Systems: Microsoft ® Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7.
SuperAntiSpyware - SAS freeware version Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, Vista or Windows 2003 400Mhz or Faster Processor with at least 256MB RAM

But, as you point out that you've checked "Every setting Everywhere, and all looked just fine" then it *might* just help if you were to post those error messages in full, exactly as shown on the screen. The fact that there is an error message at all could even give a clue as to what application is reporting the message and has to be more useful to us than no error message. (A simple 'mute' setting or minimal level setting in one of the Volume Control mixer panel options for example, or a missing audio cable between the CD-ROM and the motherboard wouldn't (normally?) produce an error message.)
"Every setting Everywhere"? - Clutching at straws - do you happen to have TweakUI installed? Have you looked in Device Manager \ CD-ROM \ Properties for possible audio (analogue)/digital settings? - But wouldn't really expect them to give error messages - my guess is that those error messages are your best clues to the problem.

Although trying the audio cable (if he's got one) might produce useful results, S/C did say that at some time in the past he's had CDs playing without the audio connection connected. (The audio cable is really a hangover from earlier days: most modern - even '98 - computers, and drives, can play CDs by reading the digital data. Using the audio cable means using digital-to-analogue converters in the player, then feeding the resultant analogue signal into the sound card, where it gets further processed.)
Not sure how it'll help, but when you have an audio CD in, and look with Windows Explorer, do you see .cda files (about 1k in size), as many as there are tracks on the CD? [] -- J. P. Gilliver. Good points. I forgot that MBAM doesn't work on Win98SE and I just remembered that the new version of SAS doesn't always work well with Win98 either. Buffalo
