As an added note to Richard's post:  Do a find on logo.sys and rename it:
logo.bmp.  Double click it and if it is the offending file, delete it.  This
should allow the original splash screen to show as it is embedded in io.sys.

Ok, my son downloaded some annoying software that overwrote the normal
startup
and shutdown screens.

I have backuped version of windows...if someone can just tell me the file(s)
that
contain the original images I would be able to restore them....
