Dear Friends and Colleagues, Please check out these first three
pieces about swine flu.
The first two make the third seem like such a hack whitewash that
one must wonder if certain Nation staffers are being bribed.
The Nation has played a key role in the broader media effort to
suppress all info revealing that elements of the Bush Junta engineered
9/11. Is it really possible that no one at Nation--despite that
fact that most of them absorb info from a variety of sources--has
yet noticed this USG guilt? Or are one or more of them being bribed
with big corporate foundation grants, lucrative corporate publishing

The Swine Flu Vaccine Screw-up
Optimism as a Public Health Problem

If you can't find any swine flu vaccine for your kids, it won't be
for a lack of positive thinking. In fact, the whole flu snafu is
being blamed on "undue optimism" on the part of both the Obama
administration and Big Pharma.
Optimism is supposed to be good for our health. According to the
academic "positive psychologists," as well as legions of unlicensed
life coaches and inspirational speakers, optimism wards off common
illnesses, contributes to recovery from cancer, and extends longevity.
To its promoters, optimism is practically a miracle vaccine, so
essential that we need to start inoculating Americans with it in
the public schools -- in the form of "optimism training."
But optimism turns out to be less than salubrious when it comes to
public health. In July, the federal government promised to have 160
million doses of H1N1 vaccine ready for distribution by the end of
October. Instead, only 28 million doses are now ready to go, and
optimism is the obvious culprit. "Road to Flu Vaccine Shortfall,
Paved With Undue Optimism," was the headline of a front page article
in the October 26th New York Times. In the conventional spin, the
vaccine shortage is now "threatening to undermine public confidence
in government." If the federal government couldn't get this right,
the pundits are already asking, how can we trust it with health
reform?
But let's stop a minute and also ask: Who really screwed up here
-- the government or private pharmaceutical companies, including
GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, and three others that had agreed to
manufacture and deliver the vaccine by late fall? Last spring and
summer, those companies gleefully gobbled up $2 billion worth of
government contracts for vaccine production, promising to have every
American, or at least every American child and pregnant woman,
supplied with vaccine before trick-or-treating season began.
According to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius,
the government was misled by these companies, which failed to report
manufacturing delays as they arose. Her department, she says, was
"relying on the manufacturers to give us their numbers, and as soon
as we got numbers we put them out to the public. It does appear now
that those numbers were overly rosy."
If, in fact, there's a political parable here, it's about Big
Government's sweetly trusting reliance on Big Business to safeguard
the public health: Let the private insurance companies manage health
financing; let profit-making hospital chains deliver health care;
let Big Pharma provide safe and affordable medications. As it
happens, though, all these entities have a priority that regularly
overrides the public's health, and that is, of course, profit --
which has led insurance companies to function as "death panels,"
excluding those who might ever need care, and for-profit hospitals
to turn away the indigent, the pregnant, and the uninsured.
As for Big Pharma, the truth is that they're just not all that into
vaccines, traditionally preferring to manufacture drugs for such
plagues as erectile dysfunction, social anxiety, and restless leg
syndrome. Vaccines can be tricky and less than maximally profitable
to manufacture. They go out of style with every microbial mutation,
and usually it's the government, rather than cunning direct-to-consumer
commercials, that determines who gets them. So it should have been
no surprise that Big Pharma approached the H1N1 problem ploddingly,
using a 50-year old technology involving the production of the virus
in chicken eggs, a method long since abandoned by China and the
European

Chicken eggs are fine for omelets, but they have quickly proved to
be a poor growth medium for the viral "seed" strain used to make
H1N1 vaccine. There are alternative "cell culture"
methods<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sen-bob-graham/why-werent-h1n1-vacccine
s_b_339986.html> that could produce the vaccine much faster, but
in complete defiance of the conventional wisdom that private
enterprise is always more innovative and resourceful than government,
Big Pharma did not demand that they be made available for this
year's swine flu epidemic. Just for the record, those alternative
methods have been developed with government funding, which is also
the source of almost all our basic knowledge of viruses.
So, thanks to the drug companies, optimism has been about as effective
in warding off H1N1 as amulets or fairy dust. Both the government
and Big Pharma were indeed overly optimistic about the latter's
ability to supply the vaccine, leaving those of us who are involved
in the care of small children with little to rely on but hope --
hope that the epidemic will fade out on its own, hope that our loved
ones have the luck to survive it.
And contrary to the claims of the positive psychologists, optimism
itself is neither an elixir, nor a life-saving vaccine. Recent
studies show that optimism -- or positive feelings -- do not affect
recovery from a variety of cancers, including those of the breast,
lungs, neck, and throat. Furthermore, the evidence that optimism
prolongs life has turned out to be shaky at best:
one study of nuns frequently cited as proof positive of optimism's
healthful effects turned out, in fact, only to show that nuns who
wrote more eloquently about their vows in their early twenties
tended to outlive those whose written statements were clunkier.
Are we ready to abandon faith-based medicine of both the individual
and public health variety? Faith in private enterprise and the
market has now left us open to a swine flu epidemic; faith alone
-- in the form of optimism or hope -- does not kill viruses or
cancer cells. On the public health front, we need to socialize
vaccine manufacture as well as its distribution. Then, if the supply
falls short, we can always impeach the president. On the individual
front, there's always soap and water.

Taliban Decline US Offer of 6 Provinces for 8 Bases

Afghanistan turned down an American offer of power-sharing in
exchange for accepting the presence of foreign troops, Afghan
government sources confirmed.
"US negotiators had offered the Taliban leadership through Mullah
Wakil Ahmed Mutawakkil (former Taliban foreign minister) that if
they accept the presence of NATO troops in Afghanistan, they would
be given the governorship of six provinces in the south and northeast,"
a senior Afghan Foreign Ministry official told IslamOnline.net
requesting anonymity for not being authorized to talk about the
sensitive issue with the media.
He said the talks, brokered by Saudi Arabia and Turkey, continued
for weeks at different locations including the Afghan capital Kabul.
Saudi Arabia, along with Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates,
were the only states to recognize the Taliban regime which ruled
Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.
Turkish Prime Minister Reccap Erodgan has reportedly been active
in brokering talks between the two sides.
His emissaries are in contact with Hizb-e-Islami (of former prime
minister Gulbadin Hikmatyar) too because he is an important factor
in northeastern Afghanistan."
A Taliban spokesman admitted indirect talks with the US.
"Yes, there were some indirect talks, but they did not work," Yousaf
Ahmedi, the Taliban spokesman in southern Afghanistan, told IOL
from an unknown location via satellite phone.
"There are some people who are conveying each others (Taliban and
US) messages. But there were no direct talks between us and America,"
he explained.
Afghan and Taliban sources said Mutawakkil and Mullah Mohammad
Zaeef, a former envoy to Pakistan who had taken part in previous
talks, represented the Taliban side in the recent talks.
The US Embassy in Kabul denied any such talks.
"No, we are not holding any talks with Taliban," embassy spokeswoman
Cathaline Haydan told IOL from Kabul.
Asked whether the US has offered any power-sharing formula to
Taliban, she said she was not aware of any such offer.
"I don't know about any specific talks and the case you are reporting
is not true."
Provinces for Bases
Source say that for the first time the American negotiators did not
insist on the "minus-Mullah Omer" formula, which had been the main
hurdle in previous talks between the two sides.
The Americans reportedly offered Taliban a form of power-sharing
in return for accepting the presence of foreign troops.
"America wants 8 army and air force bases in different parts of
Afghanistan in order to tackle the possible regrouping of Al-Qaeda
network," the senior official said.
He named the possible hosts of the bases as Mazar-e-Sharif and
Badakshan in north, Kandahar in south, Kabul, Herat in west, Jalalabad
in northeast and Ghazni and Faryab in central Afghanistan.
In exchange, the US offered Taliban the governorship of the southern
provinces of Kandahar, Zabul, Hilmand and Orazgan as well as the
northeastern provinces of Nooristan and Kunar.
These provinces are the epicenter of resistance against the US-led
foreign forces and are considered the strongholds of Taliban.
Orazgan and Hilmand are the home provinces of Taliban Supreme
Commander Mullah Omer and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
"But Taliban did not agree on that," said the senior official.
"Their demand was that America must give a deadline for its pull
out if it wants negotiations to go on."
Ahmedi, the Taliban spokesman in southern Afghanistan, confirmed
their principal position.
"Our point of view is very clear that until and unless foreign
forces do not leave Afghanistan, no talks will turn out to be
successful."
The ruling Taliban were ousted by the United States, which invaded
Afghanistan shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
Since then, the Taliban have engaged in protracted guerrilla warfare
against the US-led foreign troops and the Karzai government.

Muzzafarnagar: Hundreds of Indian Farmers from the Bhartiya Kisan
Union (BKU) stopped a goods train carrying a consignment of about
26,000 quintals of Brazilian raw sugar in the state of Uttar Pradesh
(U.P.) on 31 October and burnt a few sacks of raw sugar. The train
eventually went back the next day when the farmers threatened to
set fire to all the sugar onboard if the imported sugar was not
returned.
Farmers from UP have been protesting over the past couple of years
over procurement delays and the lowering prices of sugarcane. Their
incomes are falling but their costs are rising. More expensive farm
inputs are also leading to increasing indebtedness. Overall the
price of sugarcane set by the state government falls very short of
covering farmers expenses for the actual growing of sugarcane. The
recent drought in India has halved sugarcane production while doubled
the costs of inputs. The farmers are demanding a price of about Rs.
280 (around $6USD) which reflects their actual cost of production,
however, the state government has set a price of only Rs. 165 (around
$3.5USD). Instead of helping farmers in this crisis, the Indian
government went ahead and purchased imported sugar from Brazil.
Ironically, despite increasing the selling price of processed sugar
for consumers, the government of India has maintained the price of
raw sugarcane for farmers at a low Rs. 107.76 per quintal for the
year 2009-2010.
The liberalization of agricultural trade through free trade policies
and the World Trade Organization rules is an onslaught on the very
survival of farmers. It is resulting in cheap imports of agricultural
produce, the constant lowering of agricultural produce prices, the
increasing costs of inputs and the lowering of state support to
local farmers in India. Moreover, the farmers are not even consulted
for price setting. This is a dangerous trend in a nation like India
which on the one hand prides itself on its new status as a emerging
economic power, while the majority of its population, farmers and
rural people, are struggling for two meals a day. Stories of farmers
suicides have become a common occurrence in India and even in U.P.
sugarcane farmers are committing suicide due to pro-corporate and
anti farmer agricultural and trade policies. Recently a farmer from
Rangel village, Narendra Kumar (40), killed himself by self immolation
after setting his sugarcane crop on fire because the sugar mills
are not procuring sugarcane and millions of farmers in the sugarcane
belt of Uttar Pradesh are protesting against the government which
is just a mute spectator and playing at the tunes of sugar mill
owners. For mill owners it is cheaper to import foreign raw sugar
than buy the sugarcane from local farmers. This is also resulting
in drastic rise in the retail prices for sugar which is almost
double in this year alone, from Rs. 20 per kg to Rs. 40 per kg.
Indias sugarcane farmers continue their struggle and they refuse
to disappear. They have decided not allow the imports of cheap raw
sugar in UP and stated that if it enters the state territory, it
will be burnt. They have also taken a pledge that all goods trains
with imported raw sugar for processing in sugar mills in Uttar
Pradesh will be stopped.
Later on the 1st of November at the banks of the holy river Ganga
in Gadhmuktashwar, UP farmers under the leadership of BKU president,
Mahendra Singh Tikait took a vow to stop sugar mills until they
received a fair price for their produce.

Welcome to the Masquerade

days of Lyndon Johnson that began almost forty-five years ago, with
the assassination of JFK, the American public has been a reluctant
participant in a Masquerade Ball wherein everyone with a titled
position has been playing a double or in some cases even a triple
part in this charade.
The major problem for the public has been that they cannot seem to
tell the players apart; even with the now clearly marked lists of
criminals that had been thought to be part of the defense of the
nation-the public just cannot seem to understand the specifics of
what is and has been happening throughout all the years since LBJ
became the Dictator-despite the last nine full years and hundreds
of thousands of articles about every facet of this Masquerade.
First: Everyone among the most affected must understand that party
affiliations are transitory and misleading tokens that signify
nothing of value to anyone in the electorate. The political parties
in the United States are simply different wings of the same private
club-with no real differences between any of them. The professionals
covet the real power behind the offices they seek, and almost none
of them care about what the public might think about what they do
for themselves as officeholders in the country. These people are
like Vampires that survive on the blood-money they are able to steal
from the public in a hundred different ways each and every day. The
"issues" that supposedly matter to the rest of us are just so much
useless paper to be disposed of in order to increase their "take"
from everything we do to try and survive.
The government and the constitution has been dead and buried since
the 1968 obscenity of the 'Democratic" convention in Chicago-and
nothing that has been done since has been able to push back this
theft of our FREEDOM to speak or to demand redress for our grievances
with the continuing fascist police-state that has existed since
those police riots shut down that convention.
Secondly: Since the era of Ronald Reagan, the government has become
a full partner with the criminal-enterprises that run the gangs and
the now the thoroughly corrupted US Department of CRIMINAL-Just-Us
that has locked up their competition in the drug trade while becoming
the Vulture that protects the Hyena's and the Jackals that have
been bred to control all aspects of what was once a society. Their
cover story remains hidden behind the Office of The National
Intelligence Director:
This is who and what tried on 5-5-05 to mandate the National ID
Card, and who has continued to oversee what has now become known
as Viper-Teams of thugs whose job is to harass, torture and arrest
any potential terrorists that they might 'think' are dangerous-without
any proof beyond the suspicions of a bunch of mental retards in
Darth-Vader body armor. These Viper-Teams began as early as 2005.
"A VIPER operation began early Tuesday and lasted through the
afternoon,"
reports WVEC. "As many as 60 people with the TSA, the tunnel police,
Coast Guard, NCIS, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, Norfolk Police
and Virginia Beach Police are part of the security checkpoint that's
occurring on both ends of the span. This is the first checkpoint
at the CBBT [Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel] since the teams were
created in 2005,"
Yesterday a story came out that underscores the depth of what is
being done to us now, making full use of these Viper-Teams and their
controllers.
"Three armed felons tried to rob an El Paso, Texas Police Officer
(he's in civilian clothes) in front of a bank. The plan was to grasp
his back pack and get away on a stolen motorcycle. The well prepared
Police Officer shot all of them, managing to kill 2 at the scene.
The 3rd one was shot in both arms. Gun used: a 40 cal pistol."

A respondent to this story commented: " Had you or I shot them,
we'd be sitting in jail charged with carrying a concealed weapon
and three counts of second degree murder for excessive use of force.
Is this a great country or what?" This was my response: "No we'd
be DEAD, right beside them ~ for SUSPICION of TERRORIST ACTIVITY~
which has now become a FELONY, punishable by death-on the spot,
courtesy of the Viper-Teams, from HOMELAND INSECURITY!"
These teams are human versions of the predator missiles that we use
overseas to murder ordianry people wholesale.
This is just one of the indicators of how far the system has
deteriorated under Obama who was selected 'NOT' to CHANGE America
but to insure that the changes already made become permanent! A
second example of the lawlessness being currently enforced by the
government itself, through blind indifference to rising crime rates
and gang activity: Reinforced by government sponsorship of the gangs
and drug distribution-just underscores what happened in Northern
California recently, when a fifteen year old girl was gang-raped,
beaten and tortured by at least ten individuals, on school grounds,
outside a school dance.
"And now it is those 400 students and the rest of the 1,600-strong
student body, along with their teachers and community leaders, who
are wrestling to make sense of what happened. It doesn't take much
to trace the cause, they say.
Take the poverty-driven frustration of inner-city Richmond, a youth
street culture that glorifies thugs and applauds degradation of
women, and the desensitization of young men through violent video
games, music and language, and you have a template for trouble.
"This is like a lot of schools, where most of the kids are good
kids - and then, we know which ones are going wrong," said Charles
Johnson, one of Richmond High's security specialists.
"You wouldn't believe the stuff we have to put up with those few
who go wrong - guns, dope busts, fighting," Johnson said. "We know
that courtyard, and we've been waiting for something to happen
there.
"I'm sorry it had to be this terrible."
Johnson, teachers and students at least partially blame the attack
on the lack of lighting, sturdy fencing or security cameras on the
courtyard, which abuts a rough neighborhood on the northern end of
the campus on 23rd Street. Signs for the Norteqo and Crips gangs
are scrawled in huge letters on a wall near the driveway leading
into the courtyard.
On Saturday, district officials confirmed plans to install higher
fences around the entire school before next summer, and to firm up
security in general - but the challenges will still be steep. Johnson
also blames the attack and much of the school's troubles on nonstudent
"outsiders" - as several of the attack suspects are - who regularly
trespass on campus, and they are much less respectful of authority
than the students themselves.
But as much as anything, the attack stems from the way the roughest
young men treat women, Johnson and the others say. And this is a
problem that extends far beyond the East Bay campus' borders.
"This attack was about street culture, and the need to change that
mind-set,"
said Jay Leonhardy, a nationally recognized community organizer who
heads Richmond's Youth Works, which steers at-risk kids into work
and education programs. "It's not something you change overnight,
and it is not unique to Richmond, Oakland, Portland or Los Angeles.

This pathetic excuse for human behavior is becoming more and more
frequent and will soon become one of the new standards of behavior
in the FAILED WORLD ORDER. This is what we encourage in the places
where we send in the troops - so it should come as no surprise when
there is a backsplash over here.
There is no more valid excuse for the failure of personal responsibility
in relationship to anyone's 'FREEDOM' than this particularly hideous
CRIME of barbarism. I've been thinking about this since it happened,
but without those people that supposedly "live" in Richmond actually
willing to do anything whatever about this - then what remains to
be said? How can anyone argue with imbedded-violence and a long-standing
hatred of women; backed up by entrenched APATHY?
The "Masquerade" and our failure to decode what's really happening
to us under their near absolute control over the population is
responsible for all of these obscenities that are now becoming
commonplace. Any population that is forced to live without Freedom
is not a free society at all - but only an isolated group that
'exists' in semi-permanent denial whenever it comes to the truth
behind the events of these war-torn days, at home as well as abroad.
We can fight the lawlessness, the theft and the corruption but
without FREEDOM what is living worth?
